Television Q&A: Will Fox's 'Accused' return from recess?

You have questions. I have some answers.

Q: Will the Fox show “Accused” be coming back? In my opinion it was an excellent show, very interesting and thought-provoking.

A: The trial-of-the-week drama is not part of the plans Fox has announced for 2025-26, but the network did not entirely close the door on the show, from producer Howard Gordon. According to The Wrap, a top Fox executive said, “As you know, ['Accused'] is anthological, which means it doesn't have the same timetable for renewals as shows that have locked cast. So right now, we're talking with Howard. If there's an opportunity down the line to event-ize a return that can really work for us and Howard, we'd love to do it. Right now, there's no plan, but there could be down the line."

Q: Will there be a Season 2 of “Ransom Canyon”?

A: I have not yet seen an announcement of a second season, but there’s every reason to expect one to happen. While the Netflix drama irked some viewers with a surprise death (which I won’t spoil here), it has proven a sizable hit for Netflix with a story that one reporter summed up as “’Yellowstone’ Meets ‘Virgin River.'''

Q: Sometime during the Eisenhower administration, I remember seeing a black-and-white film made up of five unrelated playlets. I think Charles Laughton was featured in one of them, and the whole thing might have been narrated by John Steinbeck. I’d like to see it again, but I can’t remember the title.

A: That’s “O. Henry’s Full House,” from 1952, with five tales derived from the writer’s short stories — and five different directors in charge. Novelist John Steinbeck was indeed the narrator, with casts including Charles Laughton, Marilyn Monroe, Richard Widmark and others. It’s available for rent from Fandango at Home and other services. It’s also on DVD, so maybe your local library has it.

Q: I had read that there was going to be a “Peaky Blinders” movie. Is it still going to happen?

A: Yes. Oscar winner Cillian Murphy will be back as Tommy Shelby in the movie, which completed production for Netflix last year and will continue the story from the six seasons of the television series, this time into World War II. The cast of the movie — reportedly subtitled “The Immortal Man” — will also include Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Roth and Barry Keoghan. Reports indicate it will arrive late this year or early in 2026.

Q: Early in his career, Alan Arkin made a very funny movie which begins when he is driving very erratically to work. He is committing traffic violation after traffic violation. When he finally arrives at his workplace and starts his day's activities you realize he is a driving test inspector. I remember it was a B movie but better than the main movie they were showing. What was the name of the movie?

A: It appears you are remembering “Rafferty and the Gold Dust Twins,” a 1975 feature starring Arkin, with Sally Kellerman and Mackenzie Phillips as his kidnappers. It was shown on TV with the title “Rafferty and the Highway Hustlers.” By the way, Arkin had been performing for almost 20 years and was established onstage and screen by the time he made “Rafferty.” His movie credits already included “The Russians Are Coming the Russians Are Coming,” “Wait Until Dark,” “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter” and “Catch-22." His career kept going for close to 50 more years; he died in 2023.

Q: Will NBC ever air the fourth season of "Transplant"?

A: Telecasts of the Canadian medical drama's fourth and final season begin on NBC with a two-hour premiere on May 22. U.S. fans have had to wait quite a while to see this, since the third season ended on NBC more than a year ago, and the fourth season has already aired in Canada.
