Capitals' Alex Ovechkin gets standing ovation from Penguins crowd while being honored with video tribute

PITTSBURGH — The Penguins honored Capitals star Alex Ovechkin with a celebratory video during Thursday’s season finale, which created a surreal scene inside PPG Paints Arena.
Earlier this month, Ovechkin passed Wayne Gretzky to become the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer. The Penguins showed respect to their longtime rival with that tribute video, which showed highlights from some of their battles over the years.
Then the video congratulated Ovechkin for breaking Gretzky’s NHL scoring record.
The lively crowd, which had a lot of red-clad Capitals supporters, gave Ovechkin a standing ovation. He responded by taking a quick skate to center ice and waving to the crowd while Sidney Crosby and the Penguins tapped their sticks in respect.
Thursday was the 73rd time Crosby and Ovechkin met in the regular season.
